Ben Ohau Road Cheese produces small quantity, high quality, genuine handmade artisan cheeses. Our purpose-built factory is nestled amongst trees on Ben Ohau Road and is operated without a traditional electricity supply. We are focused on making original varieties of cheese, and love to show people the techniques and skills involved. Visitors are welcome to come and watch the cheesemaker at work (by appointment), and to taste the difference of genuine handmade cheeses.
Set amongst the beautiful and rugged Southern Alps, this is a truly unique environment to enjoy all aspects of cheese. The 'Aorangi Tangy' sour curd cheese has won a silver medal at the New Zealand Champions of Cheese Awards, and a bronze medal has been awarded to 'Waitaki Welsh' a fresh, young firm cheese. Other cheeses in production are a soft-style halloumi (Ohaulloumi), and a pure whey ricotta (Ahuriricotta). We will developing more styles of cheese throughout the year.
Situated in the heart of the Mackenzie Country, Ben Ohau Road Cheese is only 5 minutes from Twizel (the closest town to Mount Cook) and is on the tourist route between Christchurch and Queenstown.
